The door was in fact an oval pressure hatch, at least a man's height from the ground. Ranko, the ever show-off, didn't bother to use the ladder, she -- despite the fact that she was half-dead from thirst -- reached the hatch in one swift bound. The result was an awkward situation where she buried her nose in the engineer's chest. Akane just shook her head and entered the proper way.
The engineer was a tanned, well-muscled man around his thirties, with a Caucasian-type face and light, almost blonde hair. He looked a bit like a cowboy from a Western-style movie, sans the revolver. Everything else was in place: the stylish boots, the checkered shirt, the jeans. He silently nodded to Akane, reached the hatch, slammed it shut and turned the wheel, locking it. Then he, still without a word, returned to his place at the front left window, and turned the big, helm-like wheel. A loud hiss could be heard from below, and the train, with a loud clanking, jerked forward.
The girls looked around. The cab was very narrow, but empty sans themselves, the engineer, and the fireman, a nondescrepit middle-aged man in what could pass for a sports suit, who sat at the butt-end of a large, red-glowing crystal built into the back wall weaving some complex spell patterns around it.
The engineer asked something, not diverting his gaze from the tracks ahead. The medallion grunted, then translated clearly, without any delay:
"Am I correct in the assumption that you are the only survivors?"
"Excuse me?" replied Akane.
