It's based on 4 factors:

-- So many authors seem to think that by simply turning Ranma into a girl that they will solve all of his heartaches. And as blind and stupid as this reasoning is it is the main focus as to why people change him to a her.
ex: Genma's Daughter while a good story is total crock, when Ranma turned out to be female they only thing I noticed was Ranma's emotional distress, all other potential fallouts were suspiciously absent. And that just goes great with the ever so calm district of Nermia.

2) she is cute, she is sexy, she is onna-Ranma[/b]
-- An icon in Female anime characters, too bad she's a guy.... or is she? There are more people who like Ranma-chan in comparison to Ranma-kun, that makes it so much easier to just assume Ranma is all female.

3) *insert maniacal laugh* [/b]-- It is simply funner to screw something up than to make it better. And for Ranma there is no greater source of angst and confict than his own feminity.
ex: Josh Temple's fics.
[b]4) crossover potential [/b]
-- The great thing about Ranma is the sheer crossover potential, I've yet to see a series with a greater variety crossovers. And with Ranma's he/she thing going on it only includes more potential content.
[b]* 5) baseless fannon [/b]
-- Fannon reasoning that is based on another's fannon reasoning, that is based on another's AU; only then it is widely accepted as fact.
ex: half the fics on ff.net
