Ranma 1/2 FAQ Part 3
[Martial Arts]
by Chris Rijk
Ranma Saotome
General description
Extremely fast, agile, acrobatic and flexible. Can attack from just about
any position, in just about any situation, in just about any way possible.
Amazingly swift at learning new techniques, he often just takes a few days
(a week at most) to learn a new style (set of techniques), and sometimes in
just one all-night training session, and has sometimes learned some
difficult moves just from seeing them done once.
He can also generate new attacks (from scratch), or based on other moves he
knows very well, sometimes almost instantly. Also, very good at analysing
opponents styles, attacks and finding out weaknesses - if someone has a
weakness, he'll almost certainly find it out and use it.
He's also very strong, and can take a huge amount of damage as well as very
determined, and has only once ever come close to giving up - after learning
the Hiryu Shoten Ha, and defeating Happosai, he thought he'd never be able
to get his strength back because he thought the information was now
permanently lost. He has been taught by Genma since he was practically a
baby - in all the flashbacks when he's younger, he's always wearing a gi,
even when he was separated from his mother - at about 3. He has also
received some training from Cologne, and in the later manga, he either
trains by himself, of with his father.
He also often takes a rather relaxed attitude to combat, and doesn't fight
all out unless he has to. However, he is prepared to fight anyone and
anything (though he doesn't like fighting with girls, weak people or people
in a weakened state) and does not appear to be afraid to face death.
While he doesn't use weapons normally, he is very adept with them, and can
use just about anything as a weapon. Ranma also sometimes (literally) hangs
about eg clinging to the ceiling, or hanging upside-down from the
roof-edge, and also often walks and runs about on fences.
He is also very accurate at throwing, for example throwing a small pencil
so that the sharpened end gets stuck while trying to go through the hole in
the middle of a 50 yen coin from several meters away while clinging to the
ceiling (V30.5 p73) and flicks a coin so that it knocks another out of
Hinako's hand from several meters away (V25.8 p123). Also, in a rare
battle with Akane she (Ranma was female at the time) hit some hoops from a
huge chain (each hoop must have weighed 25Kg or so) using a small wooden
bat, to very accurately trap Akane's arms and legs (V11.11 p173-4).
In combat, he almost never uses his full strength and abilities (mostly
because he doesn't need to), and also he's fast enough that he can attack
doing head-height kicks as fast, or faster than most people can with normal
punches. Occasionally, he moves his body fast enough that it disappears in
a blur, then attacks from another angle.
Estimating maximum power
Using falling approximately 100m while carrying 4 girls (Akane, Shampoo,
Pink and Rink) in V29.7 page 113-114. Note, this actually hurts Ranma a lot
(laid up in bed for a while), though this was after a particularly
strenuous day when Ranma had taken quite a bit of damage. I'm using it
though because it's reasonably easy to get a vague idea as to how strong
Ranma is in this situation. However this is not necessarily a good example,
in determining Ranma's maximum strength as he had been damaged earlier, and
this would reduce his strength.
Equating kinetic energy and potential energy to work out speed hit the
ground at gives:
gh=v^2/2 where v is velocity (m/s), g Earth's gravity (10m/s^2), and h
change in height (m)
Therefore,
v=sqrt(2.gh)
v=sqrt(2.10.100)
v=sqrt(2000)
v=45 m/s (ignoring air friction and rounding a bit)
Say for example, Ranma used enough strength to deccelerate them in 0.1
seconds then, he would have had to use enough force for a 450m/s^2
deceleration.
Using F=ma (Force=Mass*Acceleration), and taking total weight to be 300Kg
F=450.300
F=135KN (which is approimatly 100x more than most humans could manage)
Using the Potential Energy equation to estimate power output:
PE=gmh=10.300.100
=300KJouls
Taking energy being done in 0.1 secs, then power:
P=300000/0.1
P=3MWatts
Using the PE equation, to estimate maximum weight he could lift above his
head (ie 2m):
PE=gmh Then using: PE=300KJ, g=10, h=2, then m is:
m=PE/gh
m=300,000/10.2
m=15,000Kg
Ie Ranma could lift 15 tons - though not necessarily hold it for a long
time. In comparison Lime catches a boulder (V24.10 p154) in one hand which
would weigh (taking radius as 1.5m, density as 5tons/m^3) about 60 tons.
Fist-speed (a la Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken)
Now, in V6 (Viz GN5) when Ranma is fighting Ryoga who's just learned the
Bakusai Tenketsu, Ranma hits Ryoga several 100 times so fast it looks like
one punch. Now lets say that to do this he punches Ryoga 200 times in 0.1
seconds. From looking at the picture it doesn't look like Ranma's arm
movement covers a particularly large distance, say 0.25m each way -
punching forwards, and taking the arm back. Therefore each punch takes 0.5m
at at rate of 2000/sec. Which means his fists move on average 1000m/s. Now,
this is 3 times the speed of sound, though we don't get any sonic booms.
Also, since this is the average, the maximum would be higher, say about
twice as fast.
Body speed
Ranma is never actually seen to be running especially fast, but I'll use
some standard Newton equations to work out how fast he's moving while
jumping along at high speed. When he's jumping along, if he's taking off at
45 degree angles, then his horizontal speed will equal his vertical speed.
Since vertical acceleration (is a constant (ie g), his speed can be worked
out from his height above the ground. Say he jumps about 20m high, then
(from earlier equation) his vertical speed will be sqrt(20*10*2)=20m/s, and
his actual speed sqrt(20^2*2)=28m/s. This is about 3x faster than the
fastest runner, and he can keep this up for quite a distance - a couple of
100m doesn't even tire him.
Damage taking ability
When Ranma is learning the Hiryu Shoten Ha, Ryoga happens to punch him into
the side of a mountain (V13.7 p106-7) and Ranma makes a crater about 3m
wide and 1m deep in solid rock. You could take an estimate of the volume of
rock compressed, and how much energy this would require, but I wouldn't
know how. Anyway, after taking such a strong punch Ranma is only dazed (not
unconscious) and can still fight, and this is also when Ranma has lost his
strength.
Characters' Combat Abilities
Genma Saotome
A well rounded fighter like Ranma, he however hasn't shown his son's flair,
inventiveness and not as much agility. He also is a bit of a coward,
especially about confronting Happosai, and is also a little lazy, though
that seems to be more recent as in his youth he managed to invent the
umisenken and the yamasenken and has also spent most of his adult life
training Ranma. As a young man he was trained by Happosai along with Soun,
but before this nothing is known. While there are still techniques he knows
that Ranma doesn't, his son is now in fact now better than he is, which he
admits in V21.1. A major weakness is his weakness to bribes, and traps to
do with food.
Nodoka Saotome
If Ranma and Genma were forced to commit seppeku, Nodoka would use her
sword to quickly and as painlessly as possibly end their lives. Therefore,
she would have trained herself (or been trained) to be able to use a sword
a little. She certainly isn't that adept with it, and she has only once
used it as a weapon (V34.8 P119).
Akane Tendo
While this is not shown in the manga, she was presumably trained by her
father, but in any case, she has been training since she was a child,
perhaps starting after her mother died. She trains regularly (goes on a
daily run etc.), but mostly by herself.
While she is much more skilled than most martial artists, but her fighting
style is quite simple and straightforward. She is good at general
hand-to-hand, but she doesn't have any special skills or moves, and she is
a little clumsy. As a running gag, she often manages to get a large wooden
hammer out of nowhere, and (generally quite susceptible) hammer Ranma with
it.
Soun Tendo
Like Genma, he was trained by Happosai when younger, and is also afraid of
Happosai. However, he doesn't appear to have done in frequent training in
quite some time. Due to lack of examples it isn't possible to determine
just how good he is. Logically, he would probably have been about as good
as Genma when younger, and like Genma, he is terrified of Happosai.
Dr Ona Tofu
He has been a doctor for quite some time, but beyond that very little is
known about his skills. He certainly knows a great deal about anything
related to medicine (including special pressure points), but he has never
demonstrated any actual combat skills.
In an episode of the anime near the end of the TV series, he did in fact
show he was skilled in hand-to-hand.
Tatewaki Kuno
For his age group he was probably the best in the area before Ranma and
Genma arrived, though Akane may have been almost as good, or even better.
While he has been training for at least several years (he used to fight
with his father, before he left over 3 years ago), nothing is known before
that.
While he almost only uses a sword, and a wooden one at that, he is very
dangerous with it, and is capable of cutting through a tree and even rock
with it. Though he is never far away form his sword, this doesn't help him
against Ranma, who often downs him in a single move. Also, he doesn't
appear to have much in terms of combat skills except for speed with the
sword-only attacks.
Kodachi Kuno
She has been aggressive since a kid (V32.6 p94-95), but nothing is known
about how long she has been seriously training for, or who trained her.
Like her brother, she knows what she knows very well, but little else - she
doesn't seem to have any non-gymnastic based combat skills, except for
chemical warfare. She is of course very agile (though not as much as
Ranma), and is equally adept with her ribbon, which is her most commonly
used weapon. She also uses underhanded tricks such as poisoning food with
paralysis gas, and using the same in black roses (as well as exploding
roses), especially in a bouquet, which occasionally get her the upper hand
against someone.
Principal Kuno
As with the other Kuno's, little is known about his combat abilities when
he was younger, though he used to fight with his son before he left for
Hawaii. His weapons are hair-trimmers, sometimes used as a pair, and
exploding pineapples, and he has occasionally used disguises, and some
props to help him. However, his combat ability is only on a level with his
son's.
Ryoga Hibiki
Unfortunately nothing is known about his combat abilities before he arrives
in Nerima, and since he never had a proper fight with Ranma before he
arrived, his abilities can't be inferred. It is not known if he is
completely self-taught or not either, but he does do almost all of his
training alone, which is probably why his skill level is not that high.
However, he is very strong, probably because he spends so much of his time
walking with a heavy back-pack and has a lot of endurance for the same
reason. His attack method is like that of a berserker - very aggressive,
with a lot of strength, but not a great deal of skill, or use of battle
tactics. His main weapon is his strangely heavy umbrella (though he
normally uses just plain hand-to-hand) and he also once uses his belt
like a sword and a stack of his head-bands like shuriken/boomerangs.
Shampoo
Having been trained by Cologne (and maybe others) since a very early age,
she was good enough to win her village's annual championships in a tribe of
warriors. But of course, Ranma easily beat her, but this shouldn't be held
against her, as she is probably the best of the truly female warriors of
her age-group (ie excluding Ranma, Herb and Rouge in cursed form - though
Rouge is female, she doesn't seem to have any combat skills in human form).
She is stronger than Akane (V11.9 P136), but how she relates to the other
girls in speed and skill etc. is hard to determine, as they have never had
a proper one-to-one contest, under normal conditions - though Akane and
Shampoo did have an inconcluded fight when they both had the super-strength
noodles (V11.10 P161-162). In the manga she uses a pair of maces (they
appear more often in the Anime), and she has also twice used special
acupressure point techniques on Akane, and has also often used her bike
with quite effective force by crash-landing on people, running them over
etc. She does also use some underhanded tricks and tactics, but she doesn't
rely on them, unlike Kodachi.
Cologne
Possibly the most dangerous human fighter (though Happosai might be
stronger), she has been a extremely dangerous person for a long time - she
knew the Hiryuu Shouten ha as a young woman for example. Not only is she
extremely skilled at combat, and knows a great deal of dangerous attacks,
she also knows how to use herbs, magical items and pressure/accupuncture
points very well. She also knows a great deal about unusual people and
combat styles and other unusual stuff. She sometimes uses her staff as a
weapon, but she certainly doesn't need it.
Mousse
Like Shampoo, he has been training since an early age, but who trained him
is unknown. A master of hidden weapons, he somehow keeps a small arsenal in
his robes and he is also skilled at hand-to-hand. While he can see quite
well when wearing his glasses, without them he does have trouble -
something Shampoo used against him when they were kids. Also like Shampoo,
he will use underhanded tactics to help him achieve his goals. He is a
little less strong than Ranma and Ryoga, but he is most likely faster, and
more skilled than Ryoga, but has some way to go before reaching Ranma's
level.
Happosai
An evil and dangerous old man, who knows a great deal about a great many
things. Taught Soun and Genma, but hasn't seemed to teach Ranma anything
despite the fact that he claims to be his master. As well as the many nasty
tricks he can do, he can also stop a blow or large object (eg 8m high bomb
in V11.6 P99) with a single finger, though whether that needs a special
technique, or just uses pure strength is unknown. He also has a huge battle
aura which can expand to about 20m in height, which he uses when angry. He
sometimes uses his pipe as a weapon, and he also uses his Happodaikarin a
lot. His one fatal flaw is his addiction to woman's bodies (and underwear)
and he has only ever once resisted the temptation for a short while (V15.9
P140-141) when he wanted the Dragon's Whisker to get his hair back.
Ukyo Kuonji
Trained in the okonomiaki fighting style by her father since she was a
child, she is about as good as the other girls, though she does heavily
rely on her huge combat-spatula which she carries around all the time, and
her small throwing spatulas. Some of her more unusual attacks use
okonomiaki, or ingredients of, but these are rarely seen (V9.6 P86-93 &
V33.11 P172-177) and involve super-sized okonomiaki, massive clumps of
noodles for tying up victims, exploding food etc.
Pantyhose Taro
Because he turns into a massive monster when he gets wet, he doesn't need
martial arts training as much as the others, but despite that he is good
enough to be at Ryoga's or Mousse's level. As a monster, he is immensely
strong and can take a huge amount of damage, and knowing abut Jusenkyo, he
often uses other people's curses against them. He trains by himself, though
whether he has always in unknown.
Hinako Hinomiya
Because she had a special type of body she can use two special moves - with
variations - that no one else is known to be able to use. As a child she
was taught the moves by Happosai, and she helped him by taking out the
women chasing after him on his panty raids. However, she needs a ring/torus
to suck energy from someone, and for this she normally uses coins (Japanese
coins having holes in the middle), but for blasting it back, she just needs
her hands. She is very flexible in her chi-sucking move, and can and has
used just about anything ring-shaped, and can also suck from two sources at
once - using two rings. However, her skills in actual hand-to-hand combat,
are probably nothing or next to nothing, and she does have a problem of
being a bit on an air-head - especially while a child.
Special Moves
Kakuto Shintaiso V2.9-3.5
Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics
Armed combat where all body strikes must be done with gymnastics (or
improvised) equipment, typically hoops, clubs, rope, ribbons and balls.
Kodachi fights with female Ranma over male Ranma in the ring. Kodachi uses
such underhanded moves as chaining P-chan to Ranma's wrist, a rod disguised
as rope, clubs with retractable spikes, razor sharp hoops, a moveable ring
and using 20 clubs at once. Also she her ribbon to throw the bell, Ranma
ribbon's a table, she counters with her brother and various other things
are used and finally a kettle of hot water.
Senju Konbo V3.4.76
1000 hand club - the blow of a thousand hands
Kodachi uses 20 clubs to do a blur of attacks.
Netsuto Ko Geki V2.4.83

Sanzenin raises Azusa above his head, while she is holding the other couple
horizontal to the floor, and goes into a high speed spin. He then says
he'll stop if the guy lets go of the girl. When first used on Ranma and
Akane, Ranma won't let go, and so they both go flying, and the second time
it's used on Ryoga and female Ranma - who bites Ryoga, who then punches off
Ranma.
Xi Fa Xiang Gao V4.7
Shampoo gives Akane a shampoo with formula 110, and dries off her hair in
56 seconds, leaving Akane feeling refresed when she wakes up and can't
remember anything about Ranma.
Neko-ken V5.2
Cat [style] attack
When Ranma was 6, Genma repeatedly threw him into a pit of cats covered
wrapped with various cat-treats, because he fell for a trick in a training
book - this was in fact supposed to be useless. That had the effect of
making Ranma terrified of seeing cats, and if exposed for too long, he
starts acting like a cat, and attacks with incredible speed and ferocity.
The only known ways to snap him out of this state is throwing him into
water, or getting him to sit on an old lady's lap.

Special Moves Extra Info
Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken - faster than a speeding bullet
Introduced in V5.10.
Cologne has given Ranma a pressure point jab that makes Ranma so sensitive
to heat she can't turn back to a boy, but Cologne has a 'Phoenix Pill' that
will cure Ranma. After a week of battling Cologne, she takes Ranma outside,
and sets up a small fire. She then puts some chestnuts in the fire, and
grabs them out so fast her movements blur, and she takes out all the
chestnuts without getting burnt. She tells Ranma if she can master this,
the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken, then she'll easily be able to recover the
pill. Ranma trains hard, and eventually she gets fast enough to recover the
pill - though the first one was a fake.
Some time later, Cologne teaches Ryoga the Bakusai Tenketsu, which makes
Ryoga very good at taking damage, and Ranma does a super-fast blast of hits
on Ryoga, where he hits the same spot on Ryoga several hundred times so
fast it looks like one hit. Ryoga gets hits though a tree from the power of
the punch, but it didn't hurt him too much. However, Ranma never said he
used the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken as a specific attack, rather as he used
the speed from training using the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken. In the manga,
this move is only mentioned in V5.10-11, and nowhere else does he do such a
blast of hits as he did on Ryoga. But in the anime, Ranma uses the attack
as a special move fairly often, though he often shortens saying it to just
Amaguriken.
So, in the manga, it seems the Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken is a training
method, and an indication of speed, and not an actual move, while in the
anime, it is a special move.
Bakusai Tenketsu - why chew on rocks when you can break them with a finger?
Introduced V6.5, where it was shown by Cologne, used several times against
rocks near Ranma in V6.7-8, and has also used it in, V24.5, V25.1, V27.9
and V33.5 To help Ryoga beat Ranma, Cologne shows him the Bakusai Tenketsu
- she taps a boulder and it shatters (almost explodes) into small
fragments. Genma explains to Ranma that the attack is based on the fact
that everything has a weak point, and by hitting it right, you can destroy
that thing. Cologne trains Ryoga by suspending him and a boulder each from
a rope, and swinging Ryoga at the boulder, who then has to concentrate and
destroy it with his finger else he smashes onto the rock. After a week of
training, Ryoga can not only make rock explode sending shrapnel everywhere,
but can take blows far more easier because of the training - he's gotten
very used to being hit by rocks etc.
Since the attack only works on rocks and reasonable similar substances (it
has worked on wood), but not humans, Ryoga doesn't use the attack much
later, but does occasionally find it useful - he can practically tunnel
underground with it.
Happo Daikarin - Happosai bombs away!
Introduced V11.4, and is used frequently.
When Happosai was training Genma and Soun he obliterated them after they
tried to run him over with a boulder with his terrifying ultimate move.
This also ruined a bra, and Happosai decided to 'bury' the move - he wrote
it onto a scroll, then hit it under a boulder. Back to the present, one day
Ranma, Genma and Soun all gang up on Happosai, who decides to use his
ultimate move - which scares the hell out of Soun and Genma. But it doesn't
work and Ranma wonders what Happosai was trying to do with his strange
motions while doing the move. Happosai wants the scroll back, and the
others want to stop him, but they have trouble as the boulder is in a
women's open air hot springs, where Akane just happens to be. However, not
even Happosai can read his own hand-writing because it's so bad, and tears
up the scroll, but he does remember it after Ranma smashes him with a
concrete grass-roller. Later, Ranma finds Happosai standing over Soun and
Genma, who are both unconscious and burnt. Happosai then strikes a match
and throws a small round bomb with a fuse at onna-Ranma. Since Ranma was
carrying a tennis racket at the time, she just hits is back on him. The
same happens with the next bomb, and Happosai makes a huge bomb (about 3-4m
high), but Ranma just kicks him over a cliff with it. Later, a badly burnt
Happosai is seen on TV - he did survive the massive explosion.
Happosai uses his little bombs quite often, and they can be very effective
against even the most difficult of opponents. However, Ranma does use the
move's weakness against Happosai when he can.
Hiryu Shoten Ha - Instant tornado, just add angry hot chi!
Introduced V13.4. Cologne used it on Happosai when they were both young -
see V13.9, and shows does it on Ranma, Ukyo and Genma in V13.4. Ranma uses
it on Ryoga in V13.7, Mousse, Kuno, the Principal and Happosai in V13.10,
Herb in V24,1 and V25.1, Happosai and Lukkosai in V31.3 and used by Ranma's
copy in V35.3 against Soun and Genma. Also used twice against Saffron, and
in the last chapter, to break the Dragon Tap.
Happosai made Ranma as weak as a child by burning a special mark onto his
back. Since only Happosai has the chart with the curse, Ranma must defeat
him to get his strength back - as a note, he still has his speed at this
time. While training in the with his dad, and Ukyo (who has come to cook,
and use the opportunity to get closer to Ranma), Cologne shows up, and says
she'll teach him the Hiryu Shoten Ha - a secret move of her village. She
tells the others to attack, and some distance away, Akane who is walking to
the site sees a huge flash of energy, and Ranma falls down to the ground
right next to her. However, Cologne says that Ranma only has a 20% chance
of learning the move in his current weakness, but he says he'll learn it in
3 days.
The training is hard and difficult, and the first part involves Ranma
having to spiral in on his enemy while staying calm and cool. Genma's
embarrassing photos of Ranma, and other distractions give him problems, but
after training all night he has finally perfected the first part. The next
part is to keep himself cold while standing on a rock in the middle of a
hot spring, while being attacked by Ryoga (who wander by, and decides to
help Ranma), and spiralling in. Ranma does well at this, but Cologne hits
Ryoga for not attacking all-out as Ranma needs to use hot chi.
Later, Akane wraps bandages around her arms, and sets them on fire, to give
Ranma the hot chi he needs, but her clothing catches on fire, and her top
is ruined. However, Ryoga gets very pissed at Ranma for seemingly molesting
Akane, but Ranma deliberately makes Ryoga more angry (eg "Sorry Akane,
you're so cute I had to attack you") so he can get Ryoga to attack all out.
This works a bit too well, and Ryoga punches Ranma into the side of the
mountain, making a large dent. However, despite this, Ranma starts working
on the move and begins spiralling in, staying cool, while channelling
Ryoga's hot chi into into a spiral.
Just before Ryoga is about to kill Ranma, he unleashes the finishing move -
a punch at the air using all the concentrated energy from Ryoga's chi. A
blast of energy follows, and huge gusts of winds surround the area, and a
tornado (which is perhaps over a mile high) is the centre. Ryoga falls from
the sky, his clothing shredded, and almost dead from the injuries. Ranma
isn't too well off either - he's sitting in the middle of a shallow crater,
with spiralling inward cracks in the ground, with most of his shirt
shredded.
The move uses your opponents' energy against them, though the resulting
tornado can wander into others. The most dangerous part is the main blast
of super-concentrated energy which will wreck anybody if they get hit by
it, though anyone getting caught up in the tornado will probably loose
consciousness (or at least get very dizzy from the high speed spin). People
caught in the tornado often get flung out spinning so fast they can dig a
hole in the ground. Herb and Ranma are the only people known to have had a
Hiryu Shoten Ha used on them without being hurt. Herb, a master of chi,
knew of the deadly attack of Cologne's village, and uses cold energy just
as Ranma executes the move, and just gets sucked up into the wind, but
comes flying down the centre of the tornado an blasts Ranma. Later, Ranma
deliberately tricked Herb into doing the same thing, but this time Ranma go
sucked up - and he then came down, having collected a huge amount of energy
and wipes out Herb. Note, the tornado can last up to a few minutes. In
later volumes, Ranma has gotten better at using the move, and can execute
it very quickly.
Shishi Hokodan - I want you to know, I'm feeling very depressed.
Introduced V20.1. Used by Ryoga way over 10x in V20.1-5 on Ranma, and 3x in
V33.3-5 on Ranma. He has used the full version about 7 times 20.4-20.6 on
Ranma , and once in V24.7 against Lime. Ranma has used it once on Genma in
V20.2, and about 8x in V20.2-4 on Ryoga.
